If you don’t know you want to do on a Weekend and you want to discover a hidden gem at Germany. Go spend a day in Mettlach, a city in the northwest part of Germany. With the breathtaking views and simplistic city centre your weekend will definitely be made.

On a 11min ride from the city of Mettlach is the Cloef, a vantage point from where one can see the amazing view of the Saarschleife. Once you get to Cloef, right through the parking, there are also several restaurants and pubs available. From the parking, it is a 15minute walk to reach the viewing terrace from where you can see this view.
This is where you can see the breathtaking view of the river flowing taking the shape of the mountains it surrounds. Although for us the viewing terrace was enough to soak in the amazing view, but if you like to experience the feel of the whole place, you can take the loop treetop path. As stated this is the “unique spiral observation spot” which you can pay 10EUR for and enjoy the unique ride and the views from a higher location.
You can get to the Cloef earlier during the day and then go to the Mettlach city to enjoy a bit of shopping and some lunch. Mettlach city is a 11min ride from the Cloef, so depending one what plans you have, you can enjoy either locations prior to each other.
Mettlach City
The city is a mini Trier, filled with small cafes, restaurants and local shops. Mettlach is the headquarters of Villery and Boch.
The river bank is minutes away from the city and the relaxing ambiance of the bank welcomes you to walk around, take pictures and relax. It is a perfect location to have a small picnic too.

Final Thoughts
If you live near the northwest side of Germany, make an effort to make it to the Cloef in Mettlach, as this was truly an amazing experience. The view is even more unreal that the pictures indicate. On the other hand this is a great way to spend a day of your weekend and also experience a new city.
